Thirty years ago, four friends gathered in a New York City diner and conspired to create a literary community that was their own, to cultivate a space where they could gather as a chosen family, learn from each other’s lived experiences, and celebrate the power of their artistry.
The Asian American Writers’ Workshop’s origins may be humble, but from the very beginning we have always demanded more – more for ourselves, more for our community, and more for the world. By amplifying our narratives and incubating the next generation of Asian American storytellers, we are proud to be leading a vast community of writers and readers to mobilize for a more just future.
This season we celebrate the values and ideas that have been at the heart of the Workshop’s mission since 1991. From interrogating the complexities of representation to exploring the need for an artistic home to uncovering our editorial and archival legacies, our 30th anniversary celebration will not only serve as a retrospective of our rich and layered history, but also as a resounding call to envision our future.
